چکیده

The performance testing of baseball bats for potential use in regulating bat performance is best completed using the same baseballs as are used in a game. In the current research, the effects of repeated use of baseballs in testing are explored. The batball performance is compared with ball performance off a rigid wall, and the consistency of both batand ball-performance metrics during bat-ball testing. The understanding of these conditions gives bat testers and regulatory bodies a basis for what test criteria to consider in the development of baseball bat test protocols. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

“sweet Spot” or “sweet Zone”? Modal Analysis of a Wooden Baseball Bat for Design Optimization

This paper describes modal testing of a wooden baseball bat with the purpose of finding the peak frequencies and vibration modes and their relation to the so-called “sweet spot”. Initial vibration testing was done by performing a tap test along a Louisville Slugger wooden baseball bat. The bat was suspended by elastic rubber bands to approximate free-free boundary conditions. The peak frequenci...

Simulated Composite Baseball Bat Impacts Using Numerical and Experimental Techniques

A study has been undertaken to develop techniques for assessing baseball bat durability and performance. Experimental investigations were conducted by constructing a testing device to simulate the ball-bat interaction occurring in play. A sensitivity study of the machine’s inertia and forces on the bat were found to have a small effect on hit ball speed, and a much larger effect on bat stress. ...

Comparison of the performance of U.S. and Japanese aluminum baseball bats

In 1998, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) took steps to develop a scientific test methodology to measure and to control baseball bat performance. The resulting standard uses a hitting machine that pitches a ball at a moving bat to measure the BESR (Ball Exit Speed Ratio). Concurrently, the governing body for amateur baseball in Japan developed a test protocol for controlling ...

Using vibrational analysis to investigate the batted-ball performance of baseball bats

Hollow nonwood baseball bats have performance advantages over wooden bats. The hollow barrel bats act as a spring or trampoline during the bat-ball collision. The trampoline effect can occur at different natural frequencies known as hoop modes. To examine the effect of the hoop mode on the bat-ball collision, modal analysis and performance measurements were performed on a sample of hollow nonwo...

The Effects of Moisture Content and Workhardening on Baseball Bat Performance

In recent years, baseball bat performance has come under scrutiny. Fans of Major League Baseball have seen homerun records broken and the governing organizations of both college and high school baseball have stepped in with tighter controls of baseball bat performance. This paper discusses a few of the ways that baseball bat performance is affected by changes in the material and physical proper...
